Who Am I

Almost everyday, we stand in front of the mirror as we get ready. We check our outfits, hair and accessories to make sure we look composed, clean and ready to go. We fix ourselves up on the outside … but who are we really internally? At one point, we all have to really face our reflection and ask the question, “Who Am I?”.

I challenge you to take a minute and ask yourself that question. Maybe you know the answer but maybe you don’t. Like many of us, we list some of the things we know about ourselves, but is that really your identity? Some people spend their entire lives trying to find the answer to that question. We become obsessed with the thought of ”finding ourselves” and we never get to actually live out who we were made to be. There are many voices around us directing us to who we should be, but the only voice we should be listening for and following, is God’s.

More often than not, we fall into a cycle of defining ourselves by our Instagram highlights, Facebook brag posts, follower count, fancy job title and quirky characteristics. Quickly, we begin the comparison game as we see the lives of others and look at our own accomplishments or maybe lack thereof.

But, we must remember, none of that is our identity, none of that defines us. Our culture has now accepted Enneagrams and Myers Briggs labels as sources of who we are. In theory, they are fun self discovery tests and serve as good self awareness tools, but they tell us little about our true identity. These names and labels we place on ourselves are used as identification that become who we believe we are; but they shouldn’t be the identity we settle with.

You see, we don’t crave labels, we crave the meaning behind them, a meaning we already have in Christ.

I want to take a moment and remind you who you are. If you are a believer in Christ, your identity should lie in who He is. The more we discover who God is, the more we discover who we are. We discover our true selves, the ones who Christ made us to be. As Christians, all we need to do to know who we are is look to God’s Word. We must know and believe this truth in our heart, mind and souls so that we can show it through our actions, words and thoughts. When doubts of who we are creep in and take over, Satan begins to win. Our problem is, when we are doubting, we don’t always look first to what God has to say about us. When we can learn and walk in the fullness of our identity in Christ, as sons and daughters, Satan loses. God has the final word in who we are, He always has and always will.

So, what does our identity in Christ look like? When the world was dark and without purpose, God knew who you were. He chose you. He put breath in your lungs so that you could live in His creation. We cannot look to the world to define who we are, we must look to our Creator. We are made in the image of God. (Genesis 1:27). God says I am…

1. A new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)

2. Adopted into His family (Ephesians 1:5)

3. Redeemed (Ephesians 1:7)

4. Forgiven (1 John 1:9)

5. Chosen (John 15:16)

6. Blessed (Psalm 146:5)

7. Saved (John 5:24)

8. Loved (John 3:16)

9. Accepted (Romans 15:7)

And so much more! When we know who we are and what we stand in, we can walk with the confidence that we are here on purpose and for a purpose. We can walk in our everyday lives knowing we are children of God, protected, loved and chosen. We can walk in the assurance of knowing who God saids we are.
